Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Clines.
Hi Steven, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After working for several years in the wireless industry and as a senior marketing project manager, an unfortunate downsizing layoff propelled me into entrepreneurship. Like countless others, I completed hundreds of applications to regain my place in the corporate world. It was in January of 2023 that I decided I wanted and deserved more. I had always put my love for and talent for photography and baking in the backseat of the corporate car I was driving. I was baking and providing photography services for clients, friends, and family years before my layoff, but I never dared to jump out on faith and do it full-time. I then combined my talents with my love for sneakers and hip-hop culture and opened a sneaker-themed art gallery. Once I realized I needed to take a chance on myself, I jumped in head first.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It has been a challenging road. There are so many things that you have to consider before securing a storefront location. The biggest hurdles I’ve had to endure were, working with the city to get permits and working with the health department to get approvals.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in sneaker photography and baking cookies. I am most proud to be a “keeper of the culture.” I have always been a sneaker connoisseur. Even at a young age, I have been one to appreciate sneakers. However, what sets my photography apart is that my work is raw and authentic. Photography and art do not have to be perfect. As long as I can convey my thought or look at my photos so the viewer can understand them, my goal is accomplished.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that Kansas City is full of so many talented people. I dislike that so many talented people need to take their talents and build and invest their gifts in bigger cities instead of building up a city with so much potential.
